How To Stop Emotional Eating

For many people overeating is simply a habit and a strong focus and change of behavior will be key to weight loss success in these cases. But to say that people who are overweight just eat too much, is not always true.

Sometimes people eat more, for any number of psychological reasons. In a letter that I recently got from a subscriber there is the following line: "I find myself eating sweets when i get frustrated or sad".

Stress, frustration, sadness and depression are just a few emotional triggers which can make a person want to eat more. Eating is then usually associated with these emotions and for this reason they choose to eat more to comfort themselves.

Certain chemicals in the brain are linked to both mood and hunger.

For example, one of the most likely culprits that lurks behind the act of emotional binges is cortisol -- a stress hormone that tends to make people crave sweet and salty food. So, if you experience more stress than is natural, higher quantities of cortisol is produced, leading you to crave for unhealthy foods, and this in turn leads to other health related problems. It's the domino effect.

In cases like these it is wise to resolve your emotional issues first, even if you need to consult a specialist, rather than trying to attack the eating problem first.

And for your own good, try to cope in healthy ways --

  • Exercising has the effect of letting the dominoes and the dice fall in your favor. It is the foundation of feeling good and eating healthy. Get your endorphins going, instead of cortisol.
  • Eliminate any temptations by not actually buying foods that are going to cause you a problem. This will encourage you to eat better foods and in doing so change your behavior patterns.
  • Social support can go a long way toward helping you process your feelings. Put your trust in your family, a close friend, or once again - by seeing a specialist if necessary.
  • Keep a diary. This has proven time and time again to have many health benefits beyond mere stress management. This is successfully used to set goals, keep track of daily consumption and to chart progress. Even when failures arise, these are noted, and used constructively, eventually just becoming a bad day between more and more successes. So when you feel like reaching for unhealthy food, reach for a pen and your journal instead.

Mastering Leptin The Key To Weight Loss

Leptin leapt into the headlines when it was identified in 1995 as a protein that triggers weight loss in mice. Leptin (the Greek term for thin) is a hormone released by your fat cells. When you lose fat, levels drop and when you gain fat, levels rise.

Recent research into leptin has revealed what is likely to be very important in the control of appetite, weight loss and the regulation of body weight. Advances in leptin research and its role in the control of obesity would lead to reductions in diabetes, coronary heart disease and many forms of cancer, all of which are increased in obesity.

American adults are overweight and more than 30 percent are obese. Currently 50 million Americans suffer from metabolic syndrome - a disease associated with obesity and encompassing coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes.

Leptin affects our weight and our appetites. Levels of leptin rise just before a meal and fall when people are full. It is now known that leptin not only can affect the chemical responses that affect how hungry you are but also can affect the wiring of your brain.

Scientists are interested in whether leptin may be manipulated to help people, especially overweight people, to lose weight and not put it back on. They know that leptin is released by fat cells and tells the brain how much fat is on the body. Once leptin has been secreted by your fat cells, it travels to the hypothalamus. This is the part of your brain that controls eating behavior.

Defects in leptin signaling leads to obesity, overeating, and decreased energy output.

Normally, when leptin levels in the blood go up, the brain signals us to stop eating. But since obesity isn't the result of a lack of leptin, it is a lack of response to leptin, and obese individuals tend to have more and larger leptin-producing fat cells than thinner people, their leptin levels increase substantially with every pound of additional weight gain. This is illustrated below.

Mice lacking leptin ate voraciously and grew enormously fat; leptin injections made them stop eating and slim down. The discovery led researchers to think that fat people might also lack leptin, and that it could make them lose weight. But it was not so. Scientists found that most fat people had lots of leptin, and giving them more had little effect. (The New York Times 26/11/2002).

Researchers at the Oregon National Primate Research Center conducted a study in mice involving two separate groups that were fed high-fat and low-fat diets. The high-fat diet group developed symptoms of diabetes and obesity while the low-fat diet group did not. The researchers tested cells which conduct nerve impulses and found the cells behaved as if there was no leptin present, even though levels were 40-times higher than in normal mice. (Cell Metab. 2007 Mar;5(3):181-94).

This is due to obese people becoming resistant to leptin's signal. When the brain fails to sense the leptin hormone's signal correctly it thinks that more fat is required, even though we have enough, and fat begins to accumulate while metabolism slows down. Some scientists think that either leptin is not transported through the blood-brain barrier properly or the brain is not interpreting the signals properly.

With the regular discovery of hormones involved in regulating body weight it is a diverse and rapidly expanding field.

My own research of the literature has revealed to me some dietary factors that block leptin from crossing the blood-brain barrier and interfere with leptin signaling. In addition, there are foods/methods that correct these problems. I will discuss these issues in due course.

The Turbulence Training Idol Challenge - Another Innovation From the Creators of Turbulence Training

The Turbulence Training Idol competition is yet another innovative weight loss and muscle building venture from the creator of Turbulence Training, expert trainer Craig Ballantyne.

The Turbulence Training program, which was considered revolutionary and groundbreaking when it first came out, is a program intended specifically for busy people. People with families, careers, and rich lives that don't leave much time to work out, lose weight and build muscle. But people still want to do all that, and that's why Ballantyne came up with Turbulence Training - in which the training sessions are very intense, but last no loner than 45 minutes. And for the most part can be done at home and save even the time it takes to drive to the gym.

Craig Ballantyne further demonstrated his sense for innovation when he came up with another groundbreaking workout program, bodyweight 500, which is an intense workout program in the Turbulence Training spirit relying on body weight alone, with no need for any equipment. It turned out to be so powerful and gave such results that some advocates, like TV trainer Gillian Michaels, thought Ballantyne had trained the actors of the movie 300 (undue credit which Ballantyne himself rejected).

The latest innovation from Ballantyne is the Turbulence Training Idol competition. It is a competition for users of Turbulence Training, in which Turbulence Training users send "before" and "after" pictures of themselves (the "before" picture is with a proof of "no earlier than this" date, such as a newspaper of the same day), along with their makeover stories, and anyone can come in and vote for the contestants who move on to the next stage.

The first competition ended these very days, with a winner - Emily Johnson, who lost 15.5 pounds, more than 5% body fat, lost 2 inches of her waist and 4 inches of belly fat, all in less than three months. The prize she won was $2000 in cash, plus a free 3-year platinum membership of Turbulence Training. Cash and membership prizes also went to second and third place winners.

The winners, and the others who competed with them, are not the model types; they are regular men and women who could be your next door neighbors. In fact, none of them looks like a model even in the "after" picture; but they have all visibly lost fat and built muscle, and then some.

The first Turbulence Training Idol competition was so successful that Ballantyne declared a second competition, to begin on May 1st. The second competition will be bigger than the first one, with more categories and more prizes.

The Turbulence Training program has been proven to be one of the most intense and innovative weight loss and muscle building programs out there. The Turbulence Training Idol Challenge just goes further to introduce the program to you and let you see its results for yourself, and even participate actively - as a contestant or a voter. Go here for a review on Turbulence Training and a link to the Turbulence Training Idol contest, with pictures and stories of Emily Johnson and the other winners of the first Turbulence Training Idol competition.

Inexpensive Ways To Exercise For Weight Loss!

Perhaps youre a student, trying to make it on a student budget. Or, youre a stay-at-home mother with little cash to spare. Or youre just getting started in your career and you dont have much in the way of disposable income. No matter what your situation, know that there are inexpensive ways to exercise for weight loss.

To begin with, one of the most cost-effective ways to exercise is simply by walking. It requires no special equipmentother than a good pair of athletic shoes. You can do it virtually anywherein a park, on a hiking trail, or around your neighborhood. Walking is also one of the best methods of cardiovascular exercise around. If youre able to increase your pace from three-and-a-half to four-and-a-half miles an hour, you can expend 50 percent more calories. That means that, in a half hour of walking, you could burn more than 200 extra calories.

Another low-cost way to exercise is to work out with an exercise videotape or DVD. These tapes and DVDs can cost less than $20, but they can provide you with a years worth of exercise routines. Assuming you already have a VCR or DVD player, you wont have to invest in any expensive equipment. You can also do the exercises in the privacy of your own home, so you dont have to worry about how youre dressed. Also, a number of television stations run exercise programsthe only money thats required is paying your monthly cable bill, an expense you might already have.

Yet another way to exercise without putting out a great deal of money is to ride a bicycle. While you will have to invest in a bike, you might be able to pick one up at a low price by buying second-hand through a newspaper ad or through a used bike shop. Once youve bought your bike, you wont have to invest any additional money in your exercise routine.

A number of magazines offer regular exercise features. These can be quite good and may even offer full-body workouts. By investing a mere $3.00 in a magazine, you might be able to find a fitness routine that you can use the entire year through. If you want to be really frugal, you can simply check out a fitness magazine from your local library and Xerox the exercise pages for future use.

One no-cost way to exercise is to dance. You dont even need any trainingyou can simply get up out of your seat and begin to move. Turn on a radio station with dance music and let yourself go. You might also consider checking out dance CDs and audiocassette tapes from your neighborhood library.

You can also pick up free exercise tips from the Internet. Youll find that many exercise experts offer their own websites which are filled with valuable information. Your doctor can also help you in developing an exercise routine thats right for you.

As you can see, it doesnt take a great deal of cash in order to exercise. And physicians say that, with regular exercise, you should be able to lose weight. By investing just a little bit of money up front, you can achieve as good a workout as you would be able to get at an expensive gym.

Hoodia A Safe And Natural Alternative For Weight Loss

Hoodia Gordonii is a cactus-like succulent plant native to the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa. It has received much attention recently for its use as a natural appetite suppressant. These effects were first noted in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist who studied the native San Bushmen who live in the Kalahari.

The active ingredient in Hoodia is a molecule that acts as an appetite suppressant. This is licensed to the British pharmaceutical company who actively researches its potential for use in diet pills. Hoodia has been used in traditional medicine and in other cultural practices where it differs from the currently accepted practices of Western medicine.

When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/ health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.

Use Hoodia according to the directions printed on the package or as your physician, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional has told you to do. You should also see to its storage as specified. If you suffer from diabetes or if you take medication for any blood glucose condition, have a cardiac problem or take heart-related medications, or have any condition or take any medication which relates to bleeding or blood clotting (including some sort of eating disorder), you should not ingest Hoodia until you have discussed doing so with your physician.

If you do suffer from any of the conditions we mentioned or are using any of those sorts of medications, it may be possible that you will be foreclosed from taking Hoodia. However, it is not a stimulant, and has not been shown to have any negative effects. While continued research will be necessary to ascertain completely just how safe the extract is, it does seem to be safe for the majority of users. The Oprah Winfrey diet evolved from her own successful struggle with obesity.

If you encounter any side effects, you should talk to your doctor. Interactions between Hoodia and other medications have not been documented, yet if you are taking prescription, over-the-counter, or other health supplements, it is safe practice to discuss this with your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.

The Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa is the native environment that produces the moist, cactus-like plant known as Hoodia. It was first discovered by Western science in 1937 when a Dutch anthropologist studying primitive peoples of the Kalahari saw how well it worked as an appetite suppressant. It's active ingredient is a molecule that suppresses ones appetite. This compound is licensed to a British pharmaceutical company, who is investigating its potential use in diet pills. It appears to be safe for most people although further scientific studies are required to establish the safety profile of its extract. Oprah weight loss plan is based on it.

How to Avoid Bulking Up

I want to lose weight but I don't want to bulk up. I hear that, and I'm sure you do to, from many women that strength train. I even hear it from some men.

Now for arguments sake, let's just say that this is a valid concern (so we'll totally ignore for the time being that in order to bulk up you must eat a lot, and I mean a lot of food, and that it is relatively difficult for women to "bulk" up anyway).

So how should females (and males) train so that the risk of bulking up is minimal?

Easy. There are 2 ways to modify a woman's workout so that she need not fear the bulk.

1) Reduce the volume of weight training.

Do only one work set instead of 3. So if it says 3 sets of 8, do only 1 set of 8. This will still put your body in some turbulence, allowing you to burn calories during and after exercise, as well as improving your strength and bone mineral density.

Gaining mass is a function of intensity and volume. So if a woman reduces the volume, but keeps the intensity, she will get all the strength benefits and a lot of the metabolism boosting benefits without the paranoia of getting bulky.

2) Train your clients with more bodyweight exercises.

And I'm not just talking about lunges. There are many bodyweight exercises that will help women lose fat and get lean so that they put and keep the curves in all the right places.

Lunges, split squats, pushups, decline pushups, mountain climbers, inverted rows, assisted chinups, single-leg squats, 1-leg deadlifts, and many, many more.

And of course, throughout all of this, make sure that your nutrition matches your goals.

Weight Loss Tips For Athletes

For a best performance, athletes are to be trim and healthy. Winning is based on their talent along with a healthy body. For workouts and practice, they need to shed weight without damaging their muscles. This is the point were most of them do not care about. Ultimately, such habits will lead to eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

Thus, athletes who are to be healthy end up in various diseases especially in women. Exercising towards the competition needs more effort. In certain cases, these people starve and follow unhealthy diets that might lead to diseases affecting the bone. Sudden change in the weight is always risky. An ideal goal is to reduce one or two pounds a week. Appointing a dietitian would help much in assisting a proper diet considering the weight, height, and age. Athletes should always consume a variety of food. It is advisable not to skip meals especially when hunger cannot be controlled. Consuming smaller meals within two to three hours and using considerably smaller plates keeps the person away from overeating. Skimmed milk and low fat diary foods should be preferred. Fish and chicken must be included in one meal of the day. It is better to avoid meat, but if it is a necessity remember to remove the fat before cooking. Including high-fiber food in the regime would give a feeling of fullness. Devouring fruits and vegetables will be more apt that it may avoid the person from over eating.

Fruit juices should be taken in plenty without much sugar and fat. Carbonated drinks are to be completely avoided. It is important for the athletes not to feel hungry during workouts. Weight Loss Hazards of Low-Fat Food

The revolution of zero-fat food, or low-fat food, is here. It's all around us. We see them whichever way we look at the grocery store we shop in. We here it buzzing in our ears like a mosquito through commercials. There's "Low Fat This", and "Low Fat That", and "The Other Thing Light - only x percents of fat!". They wash our brains with it, and we succumb. Who can blame us?

And they usually charge more for these low-fat items. And we pay willingly, don't we? They know how badly we want to lose weight and keep ourselves slim, trim, and firm.

I should say that the low-fat food revolution is really that - a revolution. I'm not kidding here. The variety is endless, and the taste has gotten better over the years - some of that low-fat stuff tastes just as good as the "regular". So what's the problem here?

The problem is they don't tell you everything. They count on you seeing the magic words, "low fat" or something similar, and immediately believing it's good for your fat loss purposes.

However, gaining fat happens not only as a result of direct fat consumption.

Take sugar, for example. Many of these low-fat foods contain plenty of it. Sugar is not fat; it is a simple form of carbohydrate. So why is it something to consider?

Carbohydrates dissolve in your body to provide it with energy. But if you don't use that energy, the body stores it for "cloudy days"; and that's done in the form of - you guessed it - fat. And since sugar is carbohydrate in a simple form, it is digested quickly, and this whole process happens quickly accordingly.

If your low fat food contains more complex carbs - for example, starch - this is less of a problem, because complex carbs are digested more slowly, so you have more time to use the energy they produce. But still, if you don't use it, the "low fat" label will mean very little.

So when you see food that's labeled low-fat on your grocery store shelf, be careful before you put it in your shopping cart. Read the other parts of the label, see what other things in contains. Then you'll know if that "low-fat" boast means anything.

Fat And Weight Loss Through Getting Rid Of Parasites

Fat And Weight Loss. Why Has It Not Worked?

To lose fat and weight, many of us would have tried our utmost and yet we would not have achieved the desired results. It certainly may not be for want of trying. Often, we try too hard. At times we get the results but it does not last long. We cannot seem to keep off the fat in the long term. If the usual recommendations including exercise, pills, special diet, lotions and so on have not worked for us, perhaps we need to take a totally different approach. It may be appropriate for us to find out what caused the fat in the first place. Could it be due to something in our system that is making it difficult for us to shed off the unwanted fat? Could it be due to some harmful plaque or bacteria in our stomach, intestines and colon that act as parasites that is causing the problem? The Japanese have specially formulated drinks that contain healthy bacteria which have been reported to help our digestive system. Going by the popularity of such drinks, there must be some value in it. The only Japanese to keep away from it would be Sumo wrestlers as they thrive on being fat!

What Harm Can Parasites Do?

How do these parasites get into our bodies? The answer probably lies in the food and water that we consume. It could be due to poorly cooked food and food cooked under unhygienic conditions. Raw or poorly cooked fish especially pickled salmon, trout, white fish etc., contain larvae which after 5-6 weeks mature into adult worms. The worms can lay thousands of eggs and produce chemicals as well as toxins that can even affect our brains particularly the hypothalamus. This is the gland that controls our hunger and thirst. It has been stated that parasites prevent the body from absorbing nutrients from the food we consume. What is even more serious is that these parasites can cause damage even after they die. When they die, they become mineralized like a fossil causing painful swelling and blockages within our body. This has harmful effects particularly on our digestive system and colon. Clogged bowels make it difficult for us to excrete our wastes. As a result, there is plaque build-up which provides fertile conditions for the growth of parasites.

How Do We Get Rid Of The Parasites?

For those of us who have tried everything else but have not succeeded thus far, perhaps we should consider whether parasites are the root cause of our fat and weight problem. Apart from herbal capsules, there are also drugs, health drinks and other remedies which could help to get rid of the parasites. Apple cider vinegar which has been hailed as a natural remedy for a number of ailments may also prove helpful. Before you decide on what is best for you, it would be beneficial if you could get the full details on the parasites that are behind the problem of excess fat and weight that many of us are battling with daily.

The Most Under-Rated Aspect of Weight Loss

If I were asked, "what is the most difficult thing many people find to do when they start a weight-loss program?", I would have to say right near the top of the list is this - they don't drink enough water!

Few people realize at first just how essential water is to the success of their weight-loss program. In fact, the essential place of water in our diet extends to everyone - whether they want to lose weight, gain weight or stay the same weight! We all know we can't live without water, but just why is it so important? Well there are many reasons. Read on and discover why water can help your loss weight and why it is your essential life-force.

Apart from 60-70% of your body being composed of water, water has an extensive range of functions essential to life.

. Assists digestion, absorption and assimilation of food. If you don't drink enough water you can't get the full benefit of nutrients in the food you eat.

. Assists excretion of waste from bowel and kidneys. If you don't drink enough water you get constipated and put your kidneys under stress.

. Regulates body temperature. If you don't drink enough water you compromise the evaporation process you skin uses to keep you cool.

. Your blood is 92% water. This is your body's transport system distributing nutrients around the body.

. Body secretions and digestive juices are almost entirely water.

Why should you drink water when you want to lose weight?

Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Do NOT underestimate the power of this statement. Lack of water can lead to over eating. You brain does not differentiate between hunger and thirst. So, when you think you are feeling hungry, your body may in fact be signaling to you that you are thirsty! If you are not consuming enough water each day and you feel hunger pains, chances are, your body really is crying out for water. In many instances people will find what they thought were hunger pangs were in fact, satisfied by water. Try it! You have nothing to lose, except some weight.

How do you know whether you are drinking enough water each day? Well the answer is not difficult. The average person needs around 6-8 large glasses every day.

Well then, how should you drink the 6-8 glasses per day? The aim is to drink water consistently. If you drink too much all at once or too fast, it will simply pass through you, with little or no benefit to your body.

If you are someone who enjoys the 'taste' of water, then perhaps you could fill a 1 litre empty soft drink container with water the drink through it twice during the day. Room temperature or cold water, even warm as some people like - whatever you prefer. Place it on the desk at work in front of you as a constant reminder to sip continuously throughout the day.

Other people find they need a water 'diet' to help them keep on track. So for you, here is a program easily followed to ensure you are well hydrated every single day.

1. When you wake up you will often be thirsty because your body loses water while you are sleeping through breathing and perspiration. Drink a large glass of water with a slice of lemon for zing.

2. Drink another glass of water with breakfast or a cup of herbal tea before setting off the day.

3. Mid morning - snack on a piece of juicy fruit such as orange, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew. Have a glass of water and perhaps try a dash of herbal aloe juice which is wonderfully soothing to the digestive system.

4. Lunch - think of soup or have a glass of water before your meal, or perhaps a herbal tea.

5. Mid afternoon - While you are preparing your evening meal, drink a glass of water and snack on some crunchy fresh vegetables.

6. Evening - Sip a glass of water before your meal with a dash of your favourite fruit juice for flavour.

7. After dinner - before bedtime drink your final glass of water and sleep well!

A few changes will happen when you start out with your water program. Obviously you may find that you need to 'spend a penny' more often. Why? Because you body isn't used to being well hydrated.

There is absolutely is no doubt about it. When you start drinking enough water regularly, there are great benefits. You may notice your skin significantly improve and even tired muscles will thank you. Many people find their energy is increased and constipation and headaches are reduced, as well as hunger pains.

Now here's the really exciting partmany people notice a reduction in weight and centimetres, as their body's water store become redundant and so decrease. If your diet has been one that did not provide you with adequate water, your body will have developed a pattern of storing water. It's part of the body's in-built survival mechanism - to store up the essential nutrients in short supplyjust in case they aren't available in the future. So if you don't drink enough water, you are 'conditioning' your body to store water. And water is bulk and unwanted centimetres.

It's so simple...drink water! 6-8 large glasses a day.

How do you know if you are not getting enough water each day? This is a really important question because so many of us have deprived ourselves of water for years that we have become accustomed to doing without the full amount of water our body requires and we don't recognise the symptoms of thirst.

1. The most common symptom is headaches. A major function of water is to flush toxins from the body. Your brain is 75% water, so even being slightly dehydrated can cause headaches.

2. Poor concentration/fatigue. If you body can't get rid of the toxins it will struggle and you will feel less energetic as your body diverts energy to deal with the toxins.

3. Constipation. Your body will divert water to more essential functions and as a result your stools will be harder and more difficult to expel.

4. Reduced urine output or dark urine. Did you know that up to 200 litres of water is passed through your kidneys daily? Without a fresh supply of water for the kidneys to filter waste products out of the blood, your urine will become darker.

5. Furry tongue or bad breath. If you don't have enough water passing through the mouth to wash away food particles, bacteria can proliferate and result in that 'furry' feeling or bad breath.

6. Skin. Your skin should feel elastic. When you pinch the skin on the back of your hand it should snap back instantly.

Final thoughts. Caffeinated drinks cause the body to lose water. They are what's known as diuretics as they cause your body to dehydrate. You will do your body an enormous favour by cutting back. For every cup of coffee you drink you will need to drink another TWO glasses of water to counter the diuretic effect. Explore the world of herbal teas instead, you may be pleasantly surprised!

For Texans Exercise Can Have Gender Differences

While men and women may prefer different types of fitness and exercise regimens, each gender can learn from one other. Individuals living in Austin, Dallas, Houston and elsewhere in Texas, are among those who can benefit from shared ideas.

Men and women have distinctive motivations for exercising. Typically, men work out to build muscles and become physically bigger. They challenge themselves to achieve a specific physical goal and utilize numbers to measure their progress. Combine this with the competitive nature of a workout, and it's easy to see why men are motivated to exercise.

Women, on the other hand, often exercise through a desire to look better.

Both men and women tend to overlook the health benefits of exercise, although, once they get past their initial reluctance, women tend to have a balanced approach to fitness. Indeed, workouts by women are more likely to include a mix of cardio, strength training, and mind/-body practices such as yoga or tai chi. Women are also more inclined to seek advice, whether from a personal trainer or by enrolling in group classes.

The choice of exercise varies also, with men selecting sports and athletic-based activities not requiring dance or overt coordination. Women, on the other hand, more frequently enjoy dance-based activities with toning and flexibility.

Women may also participate in group activities due to the social atmosphere. They feel more comfortable in a gym when they're with other people. While men often participate in classes such as spinning or "boot camp" workouts, women dominate other classes, especially those that touch on mind/body techniques -- the idea being that women have a more holistic approach to fitness.

Regardless of the type of fitness routine, women generally work out less than men, possibly the result of putting the care of others ahead of themselves.

Physical differences between men and women are also relevant. A good example is the difference between pelvises. Because women can tilt their pelvises more, they may perform a slightly modified squat to protect their lower backs. This might involve turning the feet outward a bit, standing with the legs slightly wider apart, and not going down so low.

Women also have less muscle than men, and therefore often use lighter weights to avoid the injuries that come from "too much, too often."

Typically, mens bodies tend to be less flexible. And women tend to have better lower body strength, while men have better upper body strength.

Despite the differences between men and women in the fitness arena, the gaps are narrowing. Women, for example, are becoming less intimidated by weight training, perhaps discovering the connection between lean muscle and weight loss.

Men and women can learn from each other in many ways. Men are teaching women that they need not be afraid of intense workouts, a counter to a perception that women are wary of building too much muscle mass. Often, women can handle more than they think they can, and a couple of sessions with a qualified personal trainer can help set an appropriate level of exercise.

Women are teaching men that fitness can be fun, through a variety of exercise routines --among them step classes, spin classes, Pilates, and yoga. Most fitness classes offer variety without sacrificing manliness, and various movement patterns or dance classes can increase balance, core strength, and flexibility in a fun, challenging way.

Diets for Weight Loss

After the Christmas and New Years holidays, it seems that most people return from their resting places with a few more pounds on, and who am I to judge them? If I myself ate to the verge of exploding, and drank as if every single beverage was running out. It is perfectly understandable why people gain some weight during these days, however it is also perfectly understandable that people want to lose those very pounds by the time the New Year has begun, I mean, that is why the New Years resolutions are for right?

You will notice that most of the people that actually wrote their New Year Resolution wrote this line: To lose some weight before summer. Why? Because they are probably planning to attend the beach, and every single person alive wants to look great in a bathing suit. This is where those popular and famous diets for weight loss come into action; there are many eating routines which claim to make you lose dozens of pounds just by eating whatever you want, but if that was the case, everyone would be perfectly fit, dont you agree?

The truth behind diets for weight loss is that they consist of a perfectly balanced intake of nutrients, which is why they claim that you can eat whatever it is that you want, given that you do not consume more than you should (which sometimes may be just a small bite). Diets for weight loss are not poorly developed, at least not all of them, however if you are truly aiming to reach your weight loss goal, then you should compliment that weight loss diet with an exercise routine that may allow you to burn the excessive amount of fat that you have been holding in your body for the last few months or years.

People who watch and manage what they eat, are not only benefited by the weight loss bonuses, they are also benefited from a healthier kind of life, and a lower risk of heart problems. Here is what you should do when following a weight loss procedure:

First of all you will need to keep those calories under control, no more than 1000 per day, and you will also need to practice an exercise routine; run until you get tired, then walk, once you recover start running again and repeat the process for 1 hour or 2, this is called a cardiovascular exercise routine, and it is the fastest method for burning fat.

Best Way To Lose Belly Fat - Is Turbulence Training The Answer?

With Turbulence Training for Fat Loss, there are a lot of workouts to choose from.

Why did they create so many fat loss programs?

The importance when burning fat through exercising it is vital that you shift the type of exercise to keep your metabolism ticking fast.

When we exercise we often stick to a program for several months without any change. This means that our body gets used to the exercise and adjust to meet the workout. This is why you should change your workout ever 5-6 weeks. This will boost the fat burning process and keep it going for as long as you would want to.

Turbulence training switches type of exercise every 4 weeks, this makes it more possible that this training will give outstanding results.

You must change your workout every 3-4 weeks.

Turbulence Training gives you many options and this article is meant to be a guide to what level would be appropriate for you.

1) The complete beginner.
If you are overweight and haven't done any physical training for a long time you should start with the Introductory Program. If you are completely out of shape you have to start here as bodyweight exercises prepare your muscles for the more heavy workouts coming in the future. It will also prevent you from having overuse injuries that we (overweight and unfit) tend to get from high-volume cardio programs.

2) Experienced lifter but haven't exercised in a month
You should start with the intermediate program but only do one set per exercise as this will prevent you from being excessively sore after the workout

3) Advanced, meaning you workout 3 times per week
You should start with the original program and work your way through the advanced workouts and when you feel you master it you should use the focused programs.

After you decide which category you fall into start following the instructions. There is a total of 12 weeks of workouts and if you combine this with one of the better diets that also improves your metabolism you will see some wonderful results!

Revolutionary, Safe, and Clinically Proven Natural Weight Loss

America is in a health care crisis. More than 60 percent of US adults are overweight and 25% are considered obese. One in four children are overweight and are headed for a lifetime of chronic illness. These numbers have nearly doubled in the last twenty years.

Excess body weight has been linked to many common conditions affecting Americans. These include: heart disease, high blood pressure, back pain, certain cancers, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes, gall bladder disorders, sleep apnea, Syndrome X (insulin resistance), and others. Health care costs directly related to obesity are second only to smoking and are increasing at an alarming rate.

Consistent weight loss can be accomplished by understanding and implementing some simple truths. Total caloric intake must be less than the amount of calories a person burns. This is known as the base metabolic rate (BMR). Low calorie high glycemic (carbohydrate) diets cause an increase in insulin which will virtually lock up fat making it impossible to burn. High insulin levels will lead muscle wasting when eating less than the BMR.

Moderate resistance training exercise is also required to insure lean muscle is retained. Maintaining muscle mass while burning fat improves body composition (increases lean muscle and decreases fat) and maintains or increases the BMR. Long term weight loss and/or maintenance is very difficult if a person has an uncontrolled appetite and/or problem with emotional eating.

These concepts are simple to understand but often difficult or impossible for the overweight person to implement. Another little known fact further explains why so many people are overweight. Ninety percent of overweight people are deficient in serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and/or epinephrine. These are important brain and nervous system chemical messengers called neurotransmitters (NTs) that affect every system in the body including the appetite and satiety centers in the brain. Most people have heard of serotonin because those suffering from depression and/or anxiety disorders are commonly prescribed selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) class drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Welbutrin, etc.

Although these drugs sometimes provide temporary symptomatic relief, they DO NOT add a single molecule of serotonin to the system. In fact, SSRI drugs cause an increased rate of excretion of serotonin which further depletes a NT deficient person. The solution is to evaluate NT levels with a simple urine test and then optimize the NT by providing amino acid therapy. The amino acids provide the building blocks to rebuild the neurotransmitters. Serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine are appetite suppressors.

In addition to their emotional/psychological functions, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine are also natural appetite supressors. When a person has therapeutic levels of these NTs in their system, they go into a state of safe appetite control. This allows them to follow their reduced-calorie diet while eliminating emotional eating and carbohydrate and chocolate cravings.

Another benefit of this elegant approach is that not only are there no side effects, but there are significant side benefits. Optimizing NT levels can help with many other symptoms of low neurotransmitters such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic fatigue, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, pms, fibromyalgia, migraines, hormonal dysfunction, adrenal fatigue, digestive disorders, and many others.

The clinical results using this approach are very promising. In a Minnesota clinic with a patient base of 690 patients, the results are as follows. Average starting weight: 211 pounds. Average total weight loss: 62.6 pounds. Average loss during first month: 16.9 pounds. Average loss during active loss program: 8.4 pounds/ month. Average goal weight: 149 pounds. Percentage of active patients reaching their goal: 90 percent.

How To Have An Effective Weight Loss?

Tip#1: Making a commitment

Long term weight loss takes time and effort. It requires a long term commitment. Make sure that you are ready to make permanent changes. No one else can make you lose weight. External pressures are usually from people closest to you and it may make matters worse. You must undertake diet and control your eating habits. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So make sure you are not distracted by other major life issues, such as marital or financial problems.

Tip#2: Get support from people close to you

You must take responsibility for your own behaviour because only you can help yourself in losing weight. You can seek support when needed from your partner, family and friends. Pick people who you know want only the best for you and who will encourage you. Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings and spend time exercising with you.

Tip#3: Set goals

Set a realistic goal to lose weight. You must exercise regularly, change your habits, go on a healthy diet

Tip#4: Eat healthy food

Avoid junk food and eat plant-based food such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In your own special recipe, you can use various foods like celery. It is actually proven that celery has negative calories, and that it takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than what you started with. Why is this so? Well, celery is low in cellulose, a substance which contains a lot of carbohydrates, but are packaged in a form which we cannot digest, hence we do not take in their calories.

Conquering Migraines: Advanced Biofeedback Boasts Permanent Success Rates of 90%

A corporate promotion meant more money and more stress for John R. Unfortunately, his migraines went from occasional to every Saturday morning for 4 months in row. Then they just stopped due to neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that works with brain function. I havent had a migraine since my 3rd session. Im continuing the training for a while longer because I dont want to have a migraine ever again.

Migraines normally run in families and Johns siblings get these headaches too. The migraine statistics are dismal. Headaches are the most common complaint physicians hear. About 20 Americans suffer from migraine headaches, but only half of these people call their headaches migraines. Of the 12% of people who get migraines, women are victims 3 to 1 over men.

Symptoms typically include horrible throbbing pain in part of the head. Nausea is common as is a sensitivity to light or sound. The pain can last for hours or days. Migraines may begin in childhood and can last throughout the life span.

An episode often begins after an accumulation of stress and then a release from stress. The ebb and flow of the autonomic nervous system is disrupted and the relaxation wheels grind. The brain stem and trigeminal nerve conspire to constrict blood flow out of the brain. An engorged blood vessel in the brain pounds against a meandering cranial nerve causing the throbbing pain. A visual aura only occurs 30% of the time but for some people that is the primary symptom.

Migraines are usually triggered by an accumulation of idiosyncratic factors. These can range from weather to wine.

Migraineurs are often highly responsible people and somewhat tightly wound. There is little point in telling them to relax. They must first learn how.

Biofeedback has been recognized for decades as an effective technique to aid migraine headache sufferers. The basic method is to teach relaxation with hand warming. Greater blood flow to the hands brings the warmth.

During the fright r flight response, blood moves away from the periphery. The opposite autonomic nervous system mode is rest n digest. Here our skin tone goes from pale to florid.

The biofeedback remedy is trial and error practice in raising your finger temperature by watching a thermometer. The goal is the facility to achieve 94.5 within 5 minutes. This does take diligent practice. Few people keep it up without lots of skillful encouragement. It works for 50% of the people or 50% of the pain depending on what the study measured.

With advances in technology have come efficiency of time. And efficacy in degree and proportion of successful results.

Now there are two kinds of neurofeedback training that have made stopping migraine headaches quite possible for over 90% of those with this debilitating disorder. The combination of methods has not been tested.

Biofeedback begins with monitoring. The first method uses an infrared sensor to detect heat radiation emanating from the forehead.

Why are human foreheads bare of hair? To cool the large cerebral cortex in the front of our skull! Learning to increase blood perfusion to the frontal cortex is acquiring biofeedback control over regional cerebral blood flow. When viewed with infrared photography each session appears to brighten the entire forehead.

Think of infrared training as brain strengthening. Sessions spent raising the infrared temperature seems to stimulate neurocellular activity. The activation becomes greater self-regulation over the cortical migraine generator.

The effect looks like enabling the brain to turn off the migraine switch. More practice at brain brightening gradually builds the ability to turn away a migraine before it gets started without conscious effort. This can interrupt a current raging migraine within 20 minutes. Clients often say It just kinda pooped out.

In the main study of 100 migraine patients, 94% got at least 50% reduction in pain after 6 half-hour sessions. During these sessions, the client looks at either the biofeedback numbers or their favorite movie. Above a moving threshold the movie plays.

The second form of neurofeedback uses an EEG or electroencephalograph to read brain waves. This micro-volt meter detects tiny brain emanations on the scalp and displays the information for biofeedback of brain activity. Every time a neuron fires it is a chemical and an electrical event.

As in all biofeedback, displaying a biological process leads to control of that function. With self-awareness comes self-regulation. All healing is self-healing where self-information is the remedy. The practitioner merely holds up a high-tech mirror and does some coaching. Home training units are now available.

The most advanced forms of brainwave biofeedback requires no special effort. You simply listen to your favorite music. If you want, you can look at a dynamic graphic. The information comes from brief pauses in the music and graphics corresponding to moments of higher brainwave turbulence.

Interrupting a brainwaves surge promotes peace of mind. So does continuous playing of the music during relative lulls in the constant mental storm as read by the EEG. The pauses are set to come often enough to be informative and transformative while still being a pleasant experience. It is like learning to drive a car steadily within the lane when there are rumble strips on both sides. Then narrow the lane. The software has 18 lanes at once spanning the brainwave spectrum.

Neurofeedback makes the central nervous system more internally efficient. Rather than closing down at lower speeds, the mind becomes better coordinated and more complex.

The real problem are the ruts and patterns we develop to over control ourselves. Any fixed brainwave pattern is a loss of freedom, a reduction in flexibility and less resilience for the entire system.

Turning down the idle speed allows a brainwave reorganization and self-repair where extraneous habits are discarded. To drop needless surging is a permanent release. To cease wasting energy is a welcome unwinding that is recognized and retained naturally.

These remedies work to create significant and often total relief for a very high proportion of clients. And when it works, it seems to work for good. Both forms of neurofeedback typically produce permanent freedom from future migraines.

When done gently, both forms of neurofeedback are safe and harmless, even for sensitive people. The other effects of neurofeedback are all benefits such as lower stress, better sleep and reduced mental chatter. Adverse effects are rare, minor and self-limiting, generally caused by pushing the system, such as blindly doing too much too soon.

Neurofeedback is highly effective in empowering the migraineur to stop getting horrible headaches. John R. found the experience of neurofeedback to be utterly calming. I feel sharper and definitely less anxious. And I havent had any more headaches, not even a hint of one. Its nice having all my Saturdays back.

Gary Ames is a licensed psychologist specializing in neurofeedback. He has a private practice near Philadelphia, PA. He also provides home training options.

Ab Exercises Are A Joke

Burn off that belly fat with a new way of training.

Goodbye situps, hello intervals.

There's no such thing as spot reducing exercises, but according to Australian research, interval training can actually help spot reduce belly fat more than body fat anywhere else on the body, so when you do interval training and you lose fat it's mostly coming from around your abs. Interval training is a big part of Turbulence Training, obviously that means that people are going to have a great opportunity to lose belly fat and therefore see their abdominals better than ever before.

Save time by cutting the crunches out of your life.

And we only use the best exercises incorporated into a total body workout to boost metabolism and help get your abdominal muscles ready so that when you get the body fat off you'll see them.

Total body exercises can build 6-pack abs as fast as crunches. Commercial gyms make workouts easy and ineffective. So that's why we use these, what I call multi-muscle exercises, rather than sitting down in a machine type of exercises. You can burn stomach fat and get abs at home with minimal equipment.

Most people don't realize how hard their stomach is working to maintain that proper pushup position when actually doing the movement. And most of the exercises I do for the abs people wouldn't think that they are for the abs like the pushup.

People still tend to believe movements like crunches and other exercises where you're laying on your back work your abs the best. Lose your gut with short burst cardio. Screw situps. You never have to do another if you want nice abs. And you know what? The best abdominals that I ever saw on people were on athletes who had never actually done any abdominal exercises in their entire lives.

They were just very fit athletes but their sporting movements and their other training gave them the abdominals that most people want. I've trained people with great abs who have never, ever done an ab workout.

So, again, don't get too hung up on the abdominal exercises, especially the ones you see in magazines that are talking about these 30 minute ab routines. Experts like to waste your time with boring ab routines. It gives them what they want but not what they need. So, don't get hung up on the ab exercises, the crunches and that type of stuff, just focus on getting rid of that body fat and you'll be surprised at how good your abs are even without spending a lot of time on your abs.

Find out the truth about fat burning workouts and how to lose belly fat with the Turbulence Training workouts.

How To Lose 40 Pounds in a Month

Just a few days ago someone asked me if it's possible to lose 40 pounds in a month, and if so how she could do it. I decided to take the answer I gave her and to make an article of it. So here it is.

But before I write about how this can be done, let me say that I suggest you give yourself more time to lose 40 lbs. A month will require some drastic measures. But if you're adamant about it, read on. You need to be aware that in order to lose 40 pounds in 30 days, you need to create a massive calorie deficit. This isn't something which is easily done. It's possible to do this in just 2 ways:

1. Use a detox diet - A detox diet cleanses your body of a great deal of undigested pounds and helps you to create a calorie deficit. A detox diet includes drinking a lot of fluids, usually water and fruit juice (fresh juice). This kind of diet flushes you out and helps to stave off hunger. In this way it's possible to lose 40 pounds fast. In a month, it can be done. However, you need to be aware that this may not be the healthiest thing to do. Using a detox diet for too long can be detrimental to the body since you're not eating a lot of necessary nutrients. It's great for fast weight loss, but don't use it for too long.

2. The second way to lose 40 lbs in a month is to create the necessary calorie deficit by working out a lot and eating in moderation. You will need to do a lot of cardio (at least 4 hours each week) and also do strength workouts, but cardio is key. You will not be building muscle tissue in this month, you will only be losing weight. If you do enough cardiovascular workouts, and eat in moderation (a lot of vegetables and fruit and short on carbs), you may be able to lose 40 pounds in 1 month. But you need to be aware that this will require a massive effort on your part.

As I said, it's possible to lose 40 pounds in a month with the right kind of determination and willpower, but I suggest you give yourself a bit more time. It'll make it easier.

Healthy Weight Loss - The Way Weight Loss Should Be Achieved

Magic diets do not exist. Crash diets or bursts of exercise are not the healthiest way to lose weight. For a successful, healthy weight loss, just follow basic mindful eating and smart nutrition suggestions. The body likes slow changes in terms of food and exercise. If you set sensible goals for yourself, you are more likely to meet them.

Your weight is the result of several factors like how much you eat and what you eat, your age and health, your genetic and psychological makeup etc. All of these factors should be addressed for a successful weight management.

There are many health benefits of weight loss. Losing excess weight considerably reduces the risk of developing diseases like diabetes and heart problems. Keeping your weight in the healthy range now, means you are less likely to be troubled by illnesses in later.

Make your lifestyle healthy. Here are a few tips:

Start with a realistic goal, which is easier to keep.

Think of weight loss in terms of permanently changing your eating habits.

Always stock the house with healthy foods. Keep the fatty foods and sweets to a minimum and fill the fridge with fruits and vegetables.

Avoid second helpings, especially at dinner. Fill up with soups, salads, raw vegetables and fruits instead.

Drink lots of water instead of high calorie soft drinks.

Minimize the use of sugar in tea and coffee.

Use skimmed milk instead of whole milk.

Avoid eating processed food

Do not snack on sweets, fries etc in between meals.

Never skip breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day. Eat lesser portions at lunch.

Avoid beer and alcohol.

Don't burst into a frenzy of exercise. Those who haven't walked for years should not tread miles on a treadmill or do a 100 push ups right at the start. Its more likely to cause you injury apart from leaving you tired and disheartened.

Start slowly. Set a realistic goal like walking 30 minutes a day and slowly increase the distance and time as and when your body gets used to it.

Consult your doctor before you start your exercise regime.

All these things will influence your physical and psychological health positively.

What you should not do while on a diet is to starve yourself. It may help you shed some weight, but chances are you will regain that weight as soon as you start eating again. Your body does not get enough nutrients. It can cause numerous negative health effects like gallstones, fainting, malnutrition etc. Also, rapid loss of weight usually means you're losing muscle and water rather than fat.

There are a lot of quick fix diets and supplements promising you a stick thin body. Diet supplements do not really help lose weight if it is not accompanied by healthy eating habits and exercise. The bottom line is that you need to burn more calories than you consume.
