Weight Loss: The Key to Discipline

Recently, two co-workers of mine were discussing their weight loss efforts and part of that conversation stuck with me. One of them said, "It sure is a lot harder to lose weight than it is to gain it." The other one answered, "Yeah, thats because gaining weight is fun." I laughed with them, because there is some truth to that statement.

Yes, it can be fun to eat with abandonment and not think about whether what you are eating is healthy or not; it is only the consequences that are painful. Examples of shorter term consequences are pain in your stomach, indigestion, and sluggishness. The longer term consequences are high blood pressure, heart disease, and shortness of breath. Seeing your appearance change for the worse is painful too. Focusing on these consequences is key to developing self-discipline.

Discipline is necessary to achieve your weight loss goals and any goal that you want to achieve in life. After all, you dont have to employ discipline to do those things that you enjoy. For example, I wouldnt have to discipline myself to eat chocolate bars because I enjoy them, however I do have to discipline myself to limit them in my life. How do I do it? Discipline requires two skills: Desire and diversion.

Desire means that you have to want the goal that your discipline will help you achieve more than anything. For example, I wanted to lose weight and get healthy more than I wanted the chocolate bars. Each time I desired the chocolate bar, I had to remind myself of the alternate goal and make it real and vivid. I had to see myself with that goal already achieved and experience the pleasure of it. I had to make that pleasure more intense than the pleasure I imagined I would receive from eating the chocolate bar.

The second skill is diversion, which is simply engaging in an activity that diverted my attention away from the undesirable activity. In the chocolate bar example, I had to either give myself something that I would enjoy eating that was healthier for me or perform an alternate activity that would help me better meet my needs. For example, if I was angry, eating a chocolate bar would not help me, but taking a long walk to cool off likely would.

My co-worker was right: For many of us, losing weight is harder than gaining it. But we need to remind ourselves that, although it is harder to lose weight, it is not impossible. It is also worth the effort. Then we use our key of discipline to help us achieve what we want. It is the only way to get the body that we deserve.

A Registered Nurse for many years, Kimberly Floyd battled obesity for much of her adult life. She achieved her ideal weight and has written a new book entitled 'Moneywise Weight Loss' which teaches others how to lose weight and save money--at the same time.

Kim has written articles for the Georgia Nurses Association publication and Nursing Spectrum Online. Now a technical writer, she has written training programs for corporate clients, including IBM, U.S. Bank, and Cingular.

Goal Setting Tips for Weight Loss

You can lose fat forever by using goal achievement strategies. This isn't motivational fluff. This is hands-on change your mindset for success secret information.

And that is really the goal that people should be setting for themselves. That's really the goal that people should be attacking when the new year comes in certainly.

And that's really the only type of goal that's going to hold enough power to keep you on the straight and narrow for long enough. Because when you feel really passionate about something, things don't feel like an effort. We all know that. We've all read books that we absolutely love, and we get lost in the time and we can't believe it's, we can't believe that four hours have been gone by while you've been reading.

It's no different with any form of a passion. When you are truly moving toward a passion, when you are truly enjoying what you doing and you can really see where the potential benefits of pursuing that passion lie you'll stay on track.

If, on the other hand you set a goal that's smaller because someone has told you what you've, what you're asking for is unrealistic, the chances are in that moment where they've told you that you are being unrealistic, what they also did was, was beat a huge chunk of your passion around the head with a rubber mallet and actually told you to stop being silly. Don't invest so much passion into this and hey, just focus on the smaller goal.

That's the best way to fail, and I think that's one of the biggest reasons why a lot of people do fail."

Weight Loss And Starvation

If you've ever tried to lose weight by starving yourself then you already know that not only does this not work, but it actually backfires, and usually makes you GAIN weight. When you try to go for extended periods of time without eating (more than four or five hours) you're basically working against your body.

Not Smart.

See, eating is natural. It's instinctive. We are hard wired as human beings to eat. So what normally happens when someone tries to starve themselves is they eventually end up succumbing to their natural instincts, and instead of eating...

They binge eat!

Now here's where it gets even worse: When this happens someone might believe that they "failed" and they need to develop more "discipline" or "will power."

They start believing that the problem is a lot worse than it actually is. Now, as I discuss in the book Living Life Lean, there is tremendous power in discipline, yet it definitely doesn't serve you when you try to use it to starve yourself!

Another reason why this misconception is so destructive is because it damages your metabolism, which is critical to burning fat and living lean. I would think that by now this debunked "strategy" would be extinct.

But it's not.

I see so many people who believe they will be different. In their mind they think it will actually work for them, and THEN once they reach their desired outcome they'll stop.

Is this, or will this ever be a solution to living life lean?

Not a chance.

So what is the solution? You take the exact OPPOSITE approach and begin to eat more often. Ironically, once you begin to eat more frequently you'll think about food less and it's actually a much easier way to become lean.

All the while, you're keeping your body in a constant state of thermogenisis (your internal body temperature is raised) and your metabolism is running on all cylinders and burning fat at an optimum rate.
