What The Hoodia Weight Loss Industry Can Learn From the TrimSpa Case

TrimSpa found itself being investigated by the FTC after its popular advertising campaign claimed that the late Anna Nicole Smith had lost 69 pounds after using TrimSpa's signature product, TrimSpa X32. During its investigation, the FTC found that the ads didnt explain that Anna Nicole was paid and more importantly, the TrimSpa claims were not backed up by any scientific research.

The FTC ultimately brought a case against TrimSpa and it was announced in January of 2007 that TrimSpa settled with the FTC for $1.5 million. In addition, TrimSpa was banned from making any further claims about the "health benefits, performance, efficacy, safety or side effects" of Trimspas supposed miracle ingredient, hoodia gordonii, unless it came up with some evidence.

Although hoodia is extremely popular today, very few people actually know much about it. As a result, there are many companies out there who are taking advantage of this and are marketing hoodia gordonii as some kind of miracle weight loss pill. Despite all the hype, all hoodia gordonii does is suppress appetite. It does not burn fat, increase metabolism, or "magically" melt the fat away.

All these claims being thrown around have really got the FTC's attention, as shown by the TrimSpa case. The TrimSpa case is sure to be just the beginning of more cases to come. The hoodia industry is in complete disarray right now. Most companies are exaggerating what hoodia gordonii can do. Certainly, TrimSpa is not the only one. Even more disturbing than all these exaggerated claims is the authenticity of the hoodia diet pills that are sold today.

A consumer advocacy group did a study in 2006 where 17 of the most popular hoodia brands were tested for authenticity. Only six brands were shown to have authentic hoodia gordonii! That's a shocking statistic when you consider the failure rate was slightly higher than 60%.

So just what does all this mean to the hoodia weight loss industry?

It means there could be a dramatic change in the landscape of the hoodia industry if the TrimSpa case is any indication. Currently, almost every company that sells and markets hoodia diet pills exaggerates to some extent what hoodia gordonii can actually do. Furthermore, the majority of the hoodia diet pills on the market today contain very little, if any, hoodia gordonii.

The crackdown by the FTC on such prominent companies as TrimSpa is good news for the consumer. With future cases that are certain to be brought about by the FTC, companies will have no choice but to straighten up their act or face stiff fines or possibly be forced to quit selling their hoodia products all together.

The only companies left standing will be those who are honest about what hoodia gordonii can do and who sell authentic hoodia gordonii. We may be surprised to find only a few left standing given the current state of the hoodia weight loss industry!

The next great thing is that not only do you burn fat whilst doing the exercise but you also continue to burn fat during the day and at a much greater rate than for any other type of exercise.

So how does HIIT work? Well obviously, the "high impact" aspect means you burn more but the "interval training" aspect means that your body and its metabolism never quite gets used to the exercise and is always trying to react but never can. The result is that you burn a ton of weight.

Weight Loss and Exercise - How Much is Enough?

Weight loss programs vary in many ways, but they all have this in common: diet must be accompanied by exercise. Either one by itself is not sufficient. I have a good friend who bemoans the fact that no matter how carefully he eats, he can't get his weight down where it should be. He also refuses to get any exercise. Although this is a common scenario, the reverse is also true. I have seen lots of guys in the gym who work out like maniacs, but they don't reach their target weight because they refuse to give up poor eating habits.

Granted, a balance of diet and exercise must be present in your weight loss program. But between the extremes of the couch potato and the body builder, how much exercise is enough?

The good news is you don't have to work out like a maniac, you don't have to swallow fistfuls of weight loss medication, and you don't have to eat like a fashion model. A middle-path of reasonable eating patterns (the right foods at the right times) and moderate, but consistent exercise will promote quick healthy weight loss and long-term weight control.

I am presently testing a weight loss supplement and diet program called The Cheia Vida Slim 10 Day Slim Down Challenge, and reporting the results on my blog. (See below.) The simple, anyone-can-do-it exercise regimen that the creator of the program, Dr. Charles Rouse, recommends is this: just get 10 to 15 minutes of exercise twice per day. I know that some of you are thinking that this isn't enough to make a difference, and that's the worst thing you could think. Inevitably, this frame of mind leads to inactivity, and the calories keep turning into fat.

In fact, that's one of my stumbling blocks. I'm an old athlete who's accustomed to spending intense hour-long sessions in the gym 4-5 days per week. (But I haven't had a gym membership in 4 years, which has really helped my weight gain.) So when I hear about doing something for 10 minutes twice per day, it doesn't seem to me that it would be worth the effort to lace up my shoes.

This kind of all or nothing thinking is exactly what allows the weight gain to sneak up on us over time, as it did in my case, aided by the aging process. Instead of doing a little, we choose to do nothing, and so the extra grams of fat add up and eventually become pounds. Think of it as caloric compound interest.

So take a look at this: even 10 minutes twice per day adds up to 200 minutes in 10 days, or 3 hours and 20 minutes! Do it everyday for a month, and you have 10 hours of exercise with just two 10-minute sessions per day. 10 hours of fat-burning for just 20 minutes per day. I can do that. In fact, that's ridiculously easy.

It's ironic that we gain weight (fat) by adding on small amounts of extra calories (that our bodies don't need) on a daily basis, but we're so reluctant to reverse the process and add up the exercise in small daily amounts to burn some of those extra calories and negate the added weight. Incremental weight loss is just as possible as incremental weight gain.

Everybody, EVERYBODY, can find 10 minutes twice per day to simply walk briskly. (Just 15 minutes of brisk walking burns about 100 calories.) Dr. Rouse recommends starting the day, even before leaving for work if possible, by walking away from your home for 5 minutes, then walking back. If possible do it before you eat breakfast for best calorie -burning results.

Another way to get in some walking time: just park farther away from your place of work, or from the front of the mall or the grocery store. Anytime you have the chance to walk an extra 50 or 100 feet or more, do it. I started doing this several years ago, and now I don't even think about it. (Though often a friend will ask, "Why are we parking way out here?") Again, it's terribly easy to do. If I hadn't been doing this over the last few years, I'd probably be carrying an additional 5 pounds right now.

If you take a long-term view with this approach, you'll really benefit. Instead of the extra weight we add on over the weeks and months and years, do the same with a little exercise. Taking advantage of these mini-workouts will add up to serious calorie burning if done consistently. Sure, sometimes you'll have to miss a day, but you can make it up when you have more time.

That's the beauty of this little bit here, and little bit there approach: it's easy, and it works, if you'll just do it. Step up your activity level and burn some fat. Admittedly, during my product test, I'm attempting fast weight loss. For this to happen, the Cheia Vida Slim weight loss pill (capsule actually) has to do its job and burn fat, suppress my appetite, and help clean some of the gunk out of my system. We'll see if it does.

And heres more good news: when you exercise, you feel better immediately. Instant gratification! And the good feeling you experience makes you want to do it again. Then when you start dropping a few pounds, you feel even better! Now you're excited to keep it going.

What you've done is create a process that feeds on itself. Momentum. Sort of like pushing a car on a slight down-hill grade: the difficult part is getting it moving. Once you do, it wants to keep on going. So although it may be hard to get started, do it! Get moving, a little bit here and a little bit there, and start burning some calories. Within a few weeks, it will become a healthy weight loss habit you can be proud of.

Using Calories For Weight Loss

Ever wondered what a calorie is? The definition of a calorie is "the amount of energy, or heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water to1 degree Celsius."

A calorie is a unit of energy that is associated with food and drink and is a measure of the energy, or heat, that food produces as your body uses it as fuel.

The first step in counting calories for your personal weight loss is to calculate how many calories you burn in a day (your total daily energy expenditure), this is the total number of calories that your body expends in 24 hours, including all activities.

This is known as your maintenance level and will be the reference point (number of calories) from which to start your dieting.

The average calorie maintenance level for women in the United States is approx 2000 per day and the average for men is approx 2500 per day. These are only basic averages and are usually much higher for athletes or active individuals.

A quick and easy method to find out how many calories you require per day for weight loss and maintenance is to calculate a calorie value with a multiplier as set out below.

Fat loss = multiply your bodyweight in pounds with 12 calories (12 x lb).

Maintenance = multiply your bodyweight in pounds with 15 calories (15 x lb).

This is a very easy method to estimate your daily caloric requirements, but it has its drawbacks as it doesn't take into account your particular activity levels or body fat levels. Despite this it will give you a good estimated figure that you can work with.

The maintenance figure that you get is the amount of calories that you need to consume to stay at your current weight. To lose weight your calorie intake must be lower than the calories you burn.

In order to lose one pound of fat per week, you must reduce your weekly calorie intake by 3,500 calories, which works out at five hundred calories per day. This can be done by reducing your calories by 500 or combining a diet with physical activity.

The bottom line is to balance your caloric intake with the amount of calories that you are burning, that's the secret to successful dieting and weight maintenance.

Becoming more conscious of counting calories in your everyday eating regime is imperative if you are trying to lose weight. Studies have shown that men and women "underestimate" their daily calorie consumption by 500 to almost 1000 calories.

You can get a truer picture by keeping a seven-day eating plan of what you typically eat and drink during the day.

At the end of each days eating, add up the total amount of calories consumed and write them down on to the eating plan. At the end of the seven days, add the total calories for the whole week and then divide by seven, you now have your daily calorie intake.

Using a calorie calculator can make counting calories easier - you can total how many calories you will need for your daily activities to give you more control over how many calories you should include in your daily diet.

Another technique for low calorie eating is to watch your fat intake as this has the most calories.

Moderation is always important when you are counting calories, severely restricting calories, causes the body to lower its metabolic rate, which reduces its ability to burn fat.

At the same time, hunger signals increase and you quickly start to crave high-energy foods loaded with fats and sugar, the same foods you are trying to do without.

This is because when you return to normal eating habits, the drop in metabolic rate caused by the restriction in calories means that your old eating habits actually represent excess in calories.

Not only do you regain the fat stores just lost, but also you may even gain a bit extra.

    Loose Skin: The Aftermath of Weight Loss

    People who lose a significant amount of weight are usually left with piles of loose skin. This sagging skin can affect anyones confidence because it can be very unsightly and embarrassing. They can even be as troublesome as the excess weight that the person once carried.
